About this deal

Preparing for a HYROX event requires careful planning to ensure you’re ready to tackle each and every station on the circuit, as well as all that running in between. For example, you need muscular endurance to be able perform 100 meters of sandbag lunges, once you are already well into the event. People underestimate what completing HYROX does to your body and some who start in the morning just don’t have breakfast.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing a run through prior to an event, or the occasional scaled down version, but to regularly be doing them likely isn’t optimal. Therefore, ensuring you include ski erg, sled pushing, sled pulling, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carries, sandbag lunges and wall balls, to some extent, in your workouts / training sessions will pay dividends (the best you can based on equipment availability in your gym). That doesn’t mean that you solely train those – as it’s likely there are other exercises which can carry over – but you do need to work on them. Please note that tickets for a Republic ofIreland event cannot be changed to an event being staged in the United Kingdom and vice versa.

That all said, 8-12 weeks of specific training is a good goal to aim for, if possible, for most people (but obviously the longer you have the better! Unfortunately, strength gains can be slow coming, especially if you are older and / or have been training for a reasonably long time. As you get closer to the event itself, it can be worth having some sessions where you try to work out how you want to break down the reps for the race itself (if you’re unable to do them completely unbroken – which applies to most people).

Everyone is different obviously with what they can manage so your training sessions should be a time when you work out the best approach for you. As an author, I hold myself to a very high standard, and nothing but my absolute best makes it into my books. HYROX is the ultimate showcase of functional fitness, putting all that work you do in the gym, at home or outdoors to the test. When training for wall balls in isolation, there are obviously a variety of options in terms of sets, reps, and weight of ball you could use.

My coach used to say no equipment is not an excuse, so in honour of him, I want to say it’s possible. It’s worth adding at this point, because of all the muscles tested, that practising wall balls isnt the only way to train for them. As you need to do these at the end of the race – when you’ll be fatigued – it is worth practicing your wall balls under fatigue as that’s when your technique is more likely to go out the window. This all said, there is a time and place for HYROX simulations, or metcons that incorporate the required HYROX movements.
