About this deal

The first example is during lunchtime when one of the student’s lunch drops onto the floor and Mr Majeika picks it up and asks the child “What is your favourite food”.

But Mr Majeika's magic saves the day, Class Three and the circus end up on the news and once again Mr Potter, the headmaster, misses it all! As a rule, magic carpets don't turn up in schools, but this is exactly what happens when Class Three’s new teacher flies in through the classroom window and lands on the floor with a bump.Written by award-winning author Humphrey Carpenter, the books were first published in 1984 and adapted into a TV series for ITV in 1988. School without magic seems rather boring and Mr Majeika doesn't last long in the other jobs he tries. Incidents such as ghostly sounds, vanishing people through walls and doors followed by strange lights ignite the sense of mystery and adventure evident in this book. He then proceeds to turn the class nuisance, Hamish Bigmore, into a frog and conveniently forgets what the reversing spell is.

Mr Majeika is the first book in a series of books that revolves around an extraordinary teacher with magical powers. I rather enjoyed how the magician would lose his temper with poor behaviour (Hamish Bigmore often falls victim) and cast various spells on pupils then apologise profusely but never know how to reverse the damage. It's not necessary to read book 1 to understand the setting, but it's a fun story and helps tie all the problems Mr.

Mr Majeika can behave just like any ordinary teacher if he wants to, but something has to be done about Hamish Bigmore, the class nuisance, and so he uses a little magic to turn him into a frog. Read all Mr Majeika is a wizard, sent to "Britland" from the planet Walpurgis because he failed his O-level sorcery exam for the seventeenth time.

Class Three is astonished when their new teacher, Mr Majeika flies in through the window on a magic carpet. Mr Majeika uses a little magic to make the evening memorable but nasty Hamish Bigmore tells the local press and gets the wizard-teacher the sack. I'm reading Stig of the Dump as I'm writing this review, and Stig uses great language and memorable description. This is particularly because of its ‘superhero’ feel like nature and magical element that children feel that they can relate to and would definitely recommend it. It is a book which has a lot of adventure and creativity expressed within it which is something that can be used to support children from Years 3-6, particularly because it helps with their own individual creativity.

I thought this was a brilliant, funny and amusing book because the characters are interesting like Melanie who cries a lot and Hamish who is naughty. The use of complex sentences are also of a good quality which would be beneficial to any child throughout his education within Key stage 2. Humphrey Carpenter (1946-2005), the author and creator of Mr Majeika, was born and educated in Oxford. Mr Majeika however is no ordinary teacher who is constantly entering unusual and exciting adventures.

Comment: The spine or cover may be slightly worn but the book is otherwise in good condition and will provide thought provoking read! Despite all his good intentions to be a teacher who does not do any magic, it seems that his wizardly background has some trouble staying hidden.Read this to my son as I remembered it from childhood, though have a feeling I may be thinking of the TV show. The first volume, Mr Majeika, was published in 1984 and was followed by Mr Majeika and the Music Teacher, Mr Majeika and the Haunted Hotel and The TV Adventures of Mr Majeika. This time there's a trip down a magic river, a battle to save St Barty's from the wrecking ball, and work experience for Class Three. All the same, trickery becomes more and more necessary, leading Majeika, Melanie and Thomas into some remarkable adventures. The pupils in Class 3 at St Barty's School are not impressed when their headteacher imposes strict rules of behaviour for Halloween.
