Still, you’re paying for the added convenience of not having to do the vacuuming yourself and worry about how often you should vacuum. Robot vacuums are an excellent solution for busy people who don’t have time to put the vacuum around. Still, they offer a good alternative for those with mobility issues because all you need to do is switch them on. Along with the vacuum itself, you get a remote control for easy operation. Change your vacuum’s settings, or run a one-off cleaning cycle with the push of a button. You also get a set of extra brushes. This is a great feature not offered by many robot vacuums. The brushes shouldn’t wear out any time soon, but it’s nice to have them when you need them. Connected bots also typically generate statistics and maps of the areas they clean. Many even create personalized floor plans, allowing for targeted room cleanings and eliminating the need for you to use "virtual walls" to cordon off sections of your home. Today, the best robot vacuums offer a full suite of cleaning tools and assorted bells and whistles. There’s self-charging and self-emptying, of course, but in their bids to be the king of the robot vacuum hill, companies like iRobot and Ecovacs have also introduced mopping, LiDAR mapping (a fancy GPS), on-board cameras, and even self-cleaning.

The Roomba S9+ is self-emptying and deposits the debris from each clean into the 14.9oz / 440ml replaceable dust bag in the charging and emptying station - meaning you won’t have to empty the robot vacuum regularly. Instead, you’ll get an alert on the app when it needs replacing, and the vacuum offers integration with Alexa and Google Assistant. It's not the cheapest robovac you can buy, but we think it's the best. The iRobot Roomba j7+ is one of the smartest standalone robot vacuums you can buy. It uses a built-in camera and machine learning technology to recognize obstacles in its cleaning path and automatically reroute itself around them. iRobot has trained its PrecisionVision Navigation machine learning algorithms to identify phone cords, power cables, headphones, pet waste, shoes, clothing, and towels on the floor using hundreds of millions of images crowdsourced from its customers who have opted in to contribute to its database. The 2,600mAh battery is also very powerful. It supplies enough juice to run the vacuum for an hour and 40 minutes before requiring a recharge. This is enough for the majority of homes. If it’s not, you don’t need to worry. The vacuum will automatically return to the charging station when the battery starts to get low. It recharges in about 90 minutes, so you can run it several times a day if you need to. Of course, if space is limited, you’re not obligated to use the charging base. You can also plug the vacuum into the charging station’s DC charger. In this case, you’ll need to manually take care of charging yourself.Although it’s a good vacuum cleaner, it’s the mopping action that impressed us most. The robot uses two circular mop pads that rotate at 180rpm, which gives the mop more cleaning power than rival robots, most of which simply wipe the floor as they pass. Some premium features are missing, though. Unlike pricier robots, the G30 Edge doesn’t use LIDAR to scan its surroundings and build up a persistent map of your house. Instead, it creates its internal map from scratch each time it goes out, using basic sensors to detect walls and obstacles. We wouldn't recommend cutting that corner if you have hairy or shaggy dogs, however: the reason we think this is such a good choice for pet owners is because its automatic emptying solves one of the big problems of vacuuming up after dogs, which is the sheer amount of hair they manage to shed. Our greyhound isn't exactly hairy, yet somehow she seems to shed her own body weight in fur every couple of days so we're constantly vacuuming it up and traipsing to the bin. We also found the robot vacuum tended to try and climb up low-lying furniture, while the customization of maps in the app wasn't as robust as we'd have liked. Similarly, look for robot vacuums that have large dust canisters or those that empty their dust bins, meaning it really can be left to clean your floors unaided.
