Alex is captured by Scorpia, and manages to help his long-time friend and caregiver after his uncle's death, Jack, (who has also been captured) escape. Alex survives by clinging onto the balloon while the platform with the terahertz equipment falls away. Julia Rothman is not so lucky and gets crushed by the platform of the balloon and the satelite dishes.
