About this deal

When the United Kingdom agreed to adopt the blue for neutral, brown for live and green/yellow for earth in flexible cables and flexible cords usually used for non-fixed installations e.g. appliances such as fridges, washing machines etc. no move was made to harmonize the colours for fixed installations in homes and other structures. Mixing any of these up and connecting them to the wrong terminal can be catastrophic and potentially deadly, hence the reason we have mentioned this once again! In terms of why the wire colour change occurred, very simply put, the changes would ensure that fixed cables in your home will (if any new circuits are introduced) carry the same colour wires as any appliance flex and also match wire colours used in Europe.

There are several different types of wire and cable that are used in domestic and industrial wiring situations and they include 2-core, 3-core, 4-core and 5-core, the most common being 3-core and 4-core. 2-Core Wire Part of the problem lies in the attitudes of the cast. Todd Gilcrist wrote in his review that Bruce Willis "seems unmotivated to smile at all, much less offer a series of emotions that constitute a believable or compelling performance." While you may not agree with Gilcrist word for word, he does hit the nail on the head: none of the actors look like they're having fun. That wouldn't be a problem if the film were a sombre, depressing existential parable, but it is a problem when you're trying to make an upbeat action thriller with lots of jokes.

Wire/cable colour changes for old and new 2-core and earth wire Wire Colour Changes for 3-Core and Earth Cable (4-Core Cable) Old Colour

The easiest way to do that is by making all existing connections into cable connectors (minimum 5 amp) or a junction box, as shown below. The live cables will be joined as they were in the ceiling rose, as will the neutrals, and finally, but very importantly, the earths. The main reason for the UK wire colour change on the 1st of April 2006 was to ensure that electrical wire colours across the UK and all European countries matched so that the live was brown, neutral was blue and earth would be green/yellow or bare. To avoid issues such as this, with a 3-phase supply there is effectively 3 separate live wires supplying electricity and as each is slightly out of phase by a third of a cycle, the electrical supply will always be constant and uninterrupted.

Please remember when attempting any electrical installations at home that you are obliged to get the completed job tested by a fully qualified electrician and obtain a minor works certificate. Failure to do this may render your house insurance invalid and you may have difficulty selling your home. Please also see our project Part P Building Regulations Once all of the wires have been labeled and disconnected, use your Philips screwdriver to unscrew the screw or screws holding the base of the ceiling rose to the ceiling. Once the screws are removed, pull the fitting gently away. The most common mistake made by many wishing to change their light fittings is that they take down the existing light and ceiling rose without marking or taking note of where each wire goes e.g. which are paired together in which terminal.

If your property is fairly old then it may still be using the old wiring scheme. For information on how to match old and new cable colours, see our new wiring and cable colours project The domestic single-phase electrical supply is AC or alternating current. This essentially means that the voltage supplied over a circuit varies. Sometimes there’s a constant supply and sometimes there’s no supply. As the UK at the time was a European country it was felt that the mismatch in electrical wire colours was confusing and to avoid any potential issues, UK wire colours changed to match the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) colours of Europe to create what’s referred to as a “harmonised system”.

Before you start anything, isolate the circuit your are working on at your consumer unit or fuse box by turning off the MCB or removing the fuse If you do decide to give this a go, if you are in any doubt whatsoever about what to do, or don’t feel totally confident, get an electrician in At this point you will now be able to see what type of wiring system is in use in your home, the junction box type or the newer loop in type.Red 3' in the Works at Summit (Exclusive).
