I wholeheartedly recommend playing through this with a smaller group, and it was thoroughly enjoyable to playthrough with 1 player as the DM and another as the hero. Although it did make certain quests a whole lot harder. Perhaps we'll see them announced next if licensing allows for it, or maybe we'll see them go in a new direction with brand new, never-before-seen quests. It’s worth mentioning from the get go that this expansion differs from the others in a really interesting way. The majority of the quests that are contained inside are all solo adventures. The box contains everything needed for this solo adventure including an elf miniature that’s unique to the expansion. All you need is the base game to build upon with all of your new components. It’s only towards the end of the adventure that you are rejoined by your fellow companions to take on the final challenge.

In addition to four new monster cards, there is a new elf card with the same stats but different artwork. There are also seven artifact cards, four treasure cards, and four new equipment cards with different types of potions, three of which can only be used by an elf. Finally, there are seven new dread spells which can be used by the monsters and eight new elf spells. The tiles transform the gameboard map in to unique rooms. Photo by Michael Knight. We can also see re-sculpts of the furniture. There appears to be a re-sculpt of almost every piece from the Game System, there are only a couple that are missing. There are also a few new plastic doors. The mirrors appear to still be made out of cardboard. A Clue for the Future The quest book is quite a weighty document and has a lot of information to dig through before you get to the quest section. There’s new mechanics, door types, enemies, tokens and icons to get your head around before you can start. That being said, they work in a similar way to the mechanics that already exist in the game, so it’s only a matter of building new steps on top of them. There are 10 quests in total which include 3 solo quests and 7 group quests, so thankfully the solo content doesn’t dominate too much of the expansion. In addition, each quest provides a manageable challenge for 1 or 4 adventurers and offers lots of opportunities for exploration and discovery. The Mage of the Mirror will include a Quest Book featuring 10 quests, 33 finely detailed miniatures, and 35 game cards that will expand the game for both Zargon and the heroes. This expansion is expected to release in the Spring of 2023 and requires the HeroQuest Game System to play (sold separately). The standing mirrors introduce an interesting new mechanic that adds exploration and mystery to certain levels. A cardboard mirror cutout can be slotted into the stands provided and included in the levels that require them. Should a player discover and use one, they may discover great treasures and secret rooms on the other side.

As always, in this review I plan on showing you everything that this new expansion has to offer whilst keeping the review as spoiler free as I can. In this The Mage of the Mirror expansion to the HeroQuest adventure, you’re challenged to confront the diabolical archmage Sinestra and save the kidnapped Princess Millandriell! As a courageous Elf, will you survive the perilous solo quests to prove your strength and valor? You must recover a legendary sword, free two of the Queen’s attendants, and navigate safely through a treacherous maze. Only then will your fellow heroes join you to pass through the mirror to the Realm of Reflection and try to free the princess. Although the first 3 solo quests felt a bit disjointed when playing as a larger group; it did allow for the idle players to know what was coming and excitedly react when the player in action made a wise or poor choice. We also took it in turns playing through the solo quests so that everyone had a go before moving onto the group ones.Also on display is the Rogue Heir of Elethorn, and it looks like some of the skill cards are flipped face-up. We might actually be able to have a glimpse at what this hero can do. If someone attending GenCon could hare a closer image of these, that would be great.
