About this deal

And as the new year starts winding toward the next one, the chants of the coming election seem inescapable, but her thoughts drift more often to her loved ones, both here and gone, the fragility and temporary nature of this one life we are given. Stephen made his first professional short story sale ("The Glass Floor") to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to men's magazines. Many were gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies.

At 69, mortality is never far from Smith's mind, and the reality of the dead and dying-- lifelong friends fading, beloved husband and brother taken--melds with the mystery of the present moment. Chance encounters real or imagined threaded into a quest, kind of a magical mystery tour, where she follows the chain of chance and coincidence--chance being the poetic language of the universe, and Smith is always the poet, looking for signs and wonders, 'reading' scraps of paper on a beach as a sign, which link to other scraps, in memory and in the succeeding scenes, in a way that recalls The Crying of Lot 49. This is a universe you not only speak to, but which speaks in return. I found myself opening up to that language as I was reading the book, noticing in what way the world was sending me these kinds of messages and metaphors. If taken to the extreme, this is schizophrenia, but if embraced with the knowledge that this is the symbolic world, it refreshes one's own connection to life and the self. Practice “hands-off” management as much as possible and “hands-on” management as much as necessary. The way this tale plays out reminds me of legends surrounding holy relics, or supposed events that confer significance upon hallowed grounds. So possibly this is an origin story for some sacred scriptures somewhere. Mostly, though, the book is a balls-out supernatural adventure. At times it reminded me of all the superhero movies we’re being fed right now by mainstream media; and this parallel led me to realize that in today’s movies we are being shown convincing representations of supernatural feats that have fascinated the human imagination for millenia. Now wonder they so intoxicate us! In some ways this is a book about absolutely nothing at all. I can see why someone could love or hate this. Personally I really enjoyed the whimsical, easy-going feel to it, with a hearty sprinkling of darkness to finish, which Smith seems to do so well. In any case, the "monkey" of the title is Sun Wukong. This story, which is so well known is Asia, is usually known as "The Journey to the West" (without "monkey" in the title). The story, credited to Wu Cheng'en, dates to the 16th century. This version was translated by Arthur Waley, a British scholar, in the mid 20th century. As he’s worked with some hugely talented comedians and showrunners the book is filled to the gills with insights, quotes and funny stories from the likes of Preface to the First Edition". Journey to the West. Vol.1. Chicago: University of Chicago Press. pp.xiii–xv.

Following the Ghent altarpiece theme towards the end, the book has multiple epilogues. Several of them are framed as “Panels”. patti smith might be the only celebrity in the world where i know absolutely everything about her personal life and absolutely nothing about her career, but that’s not going to stop me from reading her memoirs! Yes of course I would be open! Why? Because this person followed the magic formula: start with praise, then a very short self-description, then a call to action – ask for a phone conversation. Don’t ask to meet for coffee. That’s too much time investment. Ask for advice. Just a few short questions. – Roger Nygard, Cut To The Monkey After I read the chapter on sound I made a note to myself: “ I thought this book was great but it’s better then that. It’s essential.“ How to make a joke funnier – Interview with Roger NygardWhile reading through Cut To The Monkey for this review I made note of about 20 places that I thought “Wow, that’s a great quote” I should put that in the review, but that would be a few too many. Last month I learned about hookworm and its effects on the American South in American Murderer by Gail Jarrow... and this month I’m reading the chilling and very familiar sounding battle over teaching evolution in public schools in The Monkey Trial by Anita Sanchez. b. System-imposed – administrative and related demands from people (peer/associates) other than our bosses and staff, demands that are part of every organization. Admin forms to fill out, meetings to attend, phone calls to be handled. Reduce by building relationships with people in the system. They are prohibited from using any instructional materials that include critical race theory, culturally responsive teaching, social-emotional learning, social justice, ‘and any other unsolicited theories that may lead to student indoctrination are prohibited,’ according to the training.

She discussed topics and issues - that many 69/70 years old begin to do: loss of friends who have died, c. Self-imposed – how our unique contribution is made. Bad= working on staffs’ monkeys. Good= creating, innovating, leading, planning, organizing. Needed for growth and progress, to remain viable and competitive. First to disappear when pressure is on. No short-term penalty for not doing it. The long-term penalty is reactionary to problems created by others. Subordinate-imposed time does not belong in the schedule. Soon the name John Scopes would be famous all around the globe–which John began to realize with dread.” This is the retelling of famous for the time Buddhist pilgrimage of the real life Tripitaka (Hsuan Tsang) in 700AD by the Chinese author Wu Ch’eng-en in around 1550. He retells the now mythical, fantastical and legendary exploits as a profound allegory and irreverent religious tale. I have vague memories of a poorly dubbed tv series in the 1970s in the UK of the same name. In the Supernatural episode "Home", the evil entity of the episode possesses a toy monkey with cymbals, which turned on the garbage disposal while a plumber was working with the sink.

I liked this, but nowhere near as much as I loved two other books by Patti Smith: the moving elegy to photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, Just Kids; and M Train, which was part travelogue, part tribute to Patti’s deceased husband, musician Fred “Sonic” Smith.
