This results in a more detailed and realistic picture, which is especially noticeable in gaming and movies. The TV also supports HDR content, including Dolby Vision HDR, which provides even more vibrant and lifelike colors. 8K Resolution Hisense has since released a firmware update which is said to fix this compatibility problem, though we were unable to test it out during our review period.

As an upscaler, the Hisense is reasonably adept with 1080p content and all at sea with anything less information-rich. Taking a Full HD image and making it fit the screen doesn’t impact too badly on detail levels or colour fidelity, and motion remains admirably smooth and stable too. But edges can get a bit restless, and the depth of field that is at such a premium with 4K stuff disappears altogether. But taking some DVD-borne information, say, or (worst-case scenario) some daytime TV broadcasts gives the A6G what used to be called ‘the vapours’. Detail levels fall off a cliff, to be replaced by ambiguity and noisiness. Few are the televisions capable of making pictures look simultaneously soft and edgy, but the Hisense 55A6G is one of them. Unfortunately, there’s also a loss in terms of colour depth and accuracy. The crash scene on Xandar at the end of the film is a good place to spot this. There were also some frustrating compatibility issues regarding the set’s HDR support for some devices. Though the 55M7000UWG worked fine when connected to Panasonic’s 4K Blu-ray player, we were completely unable to display HDR images from the Xbox One S. Disappointingly, there are fewer HDMI ports – three instead of four, but ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) are covered across all of them so you could plug a game console into any port and benefit from those features – though they are HDMI 2.0 ports, not 2.1 specified. eARC is supported on HDMI 2 for pass-through of lossless audio. A few test runs of HDR content, including Mad Max: Fury Road on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Marco Polo on Netflix, showed a high level of fine detail and naturalistic colour gradation. The fact that Hisense’s set can produce these kinds of visuals at this price point is impressive, though it’s not entirely without flaws.Compared to the U7QF, the A7G is a downgrade in features. Where the U7Q had Full Array local dimming the A7G makes do without. It’s not a full house for HDR formats either, with the Hisense able to decode HDR10+ but not officially certified for it. There’s some careful shading of these parts of the picture and some decent light and dark detail. The depth and solidity to the image is enhanced by the Dolby Vision Dark picture mode, which gives added subtlety to Dolby Vision content. The Staten Island Ferry scene shows that this Hisense has a good handle on colour. The blue sky, the yellow ferry and the red of Spider-man’s suit are all vibrant and well-matched.
