About this deal

I hope the next book is not too far behind as do not want to lose the anticipation from the ending of this book. Not a lot happens, and when it does, the action concerns the drug trade and how suppliers are using young people to do the dirty work.

In the last book (The Benefit of Hindsight), I didn’t necessarily feel like we got the best of DCI Serrailer, but he’s back on great form in this novel having become more used to having a prosthetic arm and back investigating full time again. I read that the author planned to finish this series about 2 books ago - I think she probably should have. Her books have won awards and prizes including the Whitbread, the John Llewellyn Rhys and a Somerset Maugham, and have been shortlisted for the Booker. Tommy, Connor and Alf had all caught the school bus but Brookie was struggling behind with all his stuff in a flimsy carrier bag - and missed the bus.Vulnerable local kids like Brookie and Olivia, whose involvement gives Serrailler a bitter taste of this new landscape. Plus there was a (somewhat bizarre) shoutout for Mick Herron’s Slough House series, which are possibly my favourite books. But when the body of a young drug addict is found in neighbouring Starly, the case pulls Simon into a whole new way of running drugs Vulnerable kids like Brookie and Olivia, who will give Simon a bitter taste of this new landscape. His relationships with women show him in a poor light and it is some question that he is inappropriately dealing with a female Detective Constable.

Her novels and short stories have won the Whitbread Book, Somerset Maugham, and John Llewellyn Rhys awards; received the Yorkshire Post Book of the Year; and have been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item.

Susan Hill either reached her word count or got bored of the grubby county lines plot and decided not to tie up the loose ends. This is the first book in the series I've read, but if the writing is like this in all of them - sometimes ending a chapter very abruptly, almost as if there's something that's been left out, or hopping between two or three heads without any break to help us figure out whose head we're in now - I won't be going back to book one, as I do with many other series, and I definitely won't be picking up/requesting the next one. It’s a harsh winter in Lafferton, and with struggles both at home and on the job, Serrailler soon learns that even the familiar can hold shocking surprises. I read the first handful of books in this series, rather liked them, then kind of forgot about them.

It is winter, it all begins with the discovery in the village of Starly of the ravaged body of a young man in a flat above a Chinese herbal pharmacy, a heroin overdose, and which sparks police inquiries as they try to identify the victim. If you have been receiving Income Support, Income-based Job Seekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Employment and Support Allowance (Income Related) or Severe Disablement Allowance for 26 weeks or more before starting work you may be entitled to an Extended Payment of Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Support. I missed whatever backstory there might be with Rachel, but the fact that she is - of course - beautiful, brilliant, successful, and rich is just over the top romance novel stuff. If the change would give you less Housing Benefit and this results in an overpayment of benefit, we may recover this from your ongoing benefit. However, you should tell everyone who pays you benefits or Tax Credits that you have separated, so that they can check if it could affect your benefit entitlement. If you have recently separated from a person with whom you used to live as partners, the benefits you can get may have changed. If you do not let them know as soon as you can that you are now a single person, you might be paid too much benefit that you may have to pay back. Serrailler is, frankly, often annoying in his approach to his personal life, which is realistic and quite deliberate by Hill and which I rather admire – although there is a hint of more settled things to come.

The discovery of a drug addict, dead from an overdose, in the village led to an operation to try to combat the scourge of County Lines – drug dealers and organised crime spreading out from urban centres into rural communities, grooming children to act as couriers. There is something about these Serrailler novels that is infinitely pleasant: they are comfortable reads, reassuring in some way.As a teacher in a rural community, County Lines has been one of the principal child welfare concerns for about five years and probably has been the central concern for policing for so long that Serrailler seems a fair way behind the times and out-of-date. This is the 11th in the series and Simon must now be well into his 40s, but he still acts like a spoilt minor public schoolboy. No rich details, no deep thought, no passion (and by that I mean the passion of words, not physical passion). You must tell us about any changes to your circumstances that may affect your Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction.
