About this deal

Final note: The only thing missing on this gargantuan release are the extensive still galleries that Warner promised in the original press release. The intensity really is just staggering at times, especially with the shots of the external city streets.

I sampled each to get the general flavor, and was impressed by how specific each track gets, as well as the lack of overlap with the mammoth documentary (see disc two below). The Final Cut' finally corrects all of the messed-up details and other imperfections that have so bothered Scott (and many fans) over the years. Considering the film was originally only in stereo, I honestly wasn't expecting much directionality, but it's really impressive how much atmosphere has been provided for the mix.You know that director Ridley Scott's overwhelming visuals have been praised as some of the finest images ever burned onto celluloid. In my review for The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, I opened by discussing the difficulties of discussing a classic piece of cinema.

The extra brightness has been injected, moreover, without black levels suffering, or colors losing their naturalism. The film also looks far more detailed and sharp than the accompanying HD, SDR Blu-ray version, which looks dull, flat and soft by comparison. I love it even more on Blu-ray, although it has to be said that you won’t see the magic transformation in HD that you see in more modern features. Put the disc in the player and it autoplays the film and you may have to escape to the main menu to ensure that your audio choice is selected.Even fans who come to this release most interested in the older versions of the movie are unlikely be disappointed. As you get closer and closer to the practical models, you can see all of the little nooks and crannies with an appreciable amount of detail and depth. For one thing, I know Blade Runner pretty much backwards at this point, and I can go for a few years without watching it. Whether or not these added features are worth the extra thirty bucks or so for the 'Ultimate Edition' comes down to personal preference. I'll leave it up to the viewer to decide which version of the film is the best, but they all have something to offer.

As you’d hope with such a definitive anniversary release, the extra features are extensive and, for the most part, brilliant.

Add an Atmos soundtrack that places you in and amongst this brilliantly realised world, and the disc is a real treat (assuming you have a system to do it justice). Ridley Scott's Blade Runner is such an important piece of film history, that it almost speaks for itself whenever being mentioned. For more about Blade Runner 4K and the Blade Runner 4K Blu-ray release, see Blade Runner 4K Blu-ray Review published by Michael Reuben on August 30, 2017 where this Blu-ray release scored 4. Things take a turn when Deckard discovers a fifth replicant, Sean Young’s Rachel, and develops feelings for her.
