About this deal

I was asked in late 2021 to do an article on my top 5 Astra Militarum units to field. And so, here we are! This is key and I think where it is easy to go wrong with Bullgryns. They hit hard yes, but they are not Tyranid Monsters or Knights. The decision between Slabshield or Brute Shield ultimately comes down to the type of enemy you will be throwing your Bullgryn against. Take the Slabshield for massed low AP fire and take the Brute Shield against high AP fire. The Bullgryn Maul bumps the Bullgryn up to S7, AP-1 and D2. Your base unit of Bullgryns will operate like so on the charge: Under the new Morale Phase if you lose one Bullgryn (and it will not be the Bone ‘ead because you decide which one dies) then your remaining Bullgryns will still be Leadership 8. If you roll a 6 then you cannot lose another one as the maximum you can roll is 7. Even if you lose two Bullgryns and the Bone ‘ead remains and you roll a 6 this adds up to 8 under the new rules. This 8 equals your Leadership so you’re safe again from taking additional casualties from failing a morale test.

This is going to be about fun or interesting units I like to field, rather than those that are particularly powerful for the Astra Militarum. Yet their remarkably resilient physiology often allows them to shrug off such blows without difficulty, ignoring small arms fire and shrapnel as a man might ignore the buzzing of corpse flies. An Ogryn's primitive nature is the direct result of the harsh environment in which they develop; the cold, feral worlds of ice and death that the Ogryn subspecies calls home providing little incentive for mental development. As such, an Ogryn embodies the most primitive aspects of Humanity, though greatly enhanced and exaggerated due to their severe retrogression. Rarer still are those instances where an Ogryn will form a bond of fellowship with a low-ranking officer or even regular Guardsmen. The simple minds of these hulking Abhumans can for reasons unknown become fixated upon a particular Human, especially if that Human shows them kindness (or just happens to be in the right place at the right time). You can also read about more Bullgryn Tactics and also about magnetising your Bullgryns and Ogryns. And thanks for reading this Bullgryns vs Ogryns article.Unlike the more common Ogryn Bulwark or Gun Ripper-squads, the Charonite squads were a far more specialised detachment that could, in some regards, be considered as the predecessors of the present-day Astra Militarum Bullgryns, although they also shared a lot in common with the infamous Chaos Ogryn Berserkers which are thought to be a bastardised version of the original Charonite-template. Both of these platforms have had a huge glow-up relative to their 9th Edition counterparts due to a combination of the general changes to [Indirect Fire] , very good and relevant Datasheet abilities, and 10th Edition-competitive shooting profiles. The Adeptus Ministorum has difficulties with equiping our newest recruits: Bullgryns. We are granted 2 Squads. One for close combat and one for fire support. One of the adepts suggested we use slab shields with the Bullgryn Mauls and Brute Shields with the Grenadier Gauntlets. The biggest change to Guardsmen squads is that they can now be taken in units of 10 or units of 20 (henceforth referred to as double-wide). Otherwise, their equipment options and composition haven’t changed at all from their 9th Edition counterparts. They all share the Vox-caster ability, which allows you to gain 1CP on a roll of a 5+ if you target the unit with a Strategem; this roll is improved if Officers are around. The difference between them generally comes from their abilities, where you have four flavors to choose from: Other members of these units often rely on the relentless fire of a Gun Lugger, advancing forward while their large comrade empties round after round at every enemy in sight. Gun Luggers are also particularly useful among squads of other Ogryn or similarly equipped assault units, providing crucial fire support until their more "hands on" companions can close the distance to their foe.

A Toughness 6 target with a 3+ save will take 7 wounds from a Bullgryn charge with a Priest on average. So it’s going to be either dead or very crippled. Elite Infantry Very few Imperial Guard officers will even try to teach them the relatively complex operation of a ripper gun. Instead, crude but deadly close-combat weapons are hastily manufactured for newly raised regiments. Thus, the Ogryns are encouraged to perform in combat as they have become accustomed - as vicious, close-combat troops. In battle, Ogryns are all but uncontrollable. Thus, they are used sparingly, with just 1 or 2 squads being assigned to any one action alongside other forces. [10] Other Variations Ogryn Psyker The Ogryns have a 5+ save, the same as a Guardsmen, so Bolter or Heavy Bolter with any volume will cut them down easily. They have no shield to take either. For me, the Bullgryns are excellent at melee and if you want a melee unit in your Astra Militarum force then the Bullgryns is an auto-include. It’s very easy to detail a bad target. But if you want to avoid hitting big things and things with one wound. What’s the middle ground? Some simply enjoy crushing enemy skulls to powder or tearing off limbs with their bare hands, while others may rely on their volatile temperament, flying off into a killing rage at the mere mention of their hated enemy. Some are so stupid they cannot truly comprehend the nature of their situation, delighting in what they consider an enjoyable game as they revel in the shouts of encouragement and support from their comrades.

This month’s White Dwarf features new missions and a set of new rules for Kill Team, called Dispositions. Dispositions basically function as a subfaction on top of the already existing subfactions and give you a set of 3 Tactics to play with. Most of them are really good, and add a level of flavorful customization to teams that we wish was in the core rulebook, since they’re a much better way of customizing your non-specialists than the level-based boosts in the book’s Campaigns section. The broad downside is that the bonuses are all Tactic-based, and so that means these will be competing for already scarce CP resources. Still, they go a long way toward supporting a particular strategy and team flavor, and can help make non-specialist team members more useful. This is the same as 8th, but now that D2 is looking a might bit better in how it splits up offensively. On the downside though, these units aren't going to be AS tanky as they were before. The marine profile changing is having waves in weapon damage quality throughout the system, and until Guard codex comes along, they are going to feel all the pain without reaping much in return. With 2 damage Heavy bolters and generally more accurate heavy weapons all across the board, Bullgryns might very well fall before doing their duty in melee. This is somewhat mitigated though, if you have an excess of OTHER models that these weapons would rather be pointed at. I'm looking at you Tank Commander. Thus, I feel that these models complement Mechanized Lists more so than Infantry Lists. The status of the remaining fifteen Abhuman races is quite varied and there is permanent disagreement about their specific classification amongst the adepts of the Tithes Chamber Notaries. The most noteworthy and contentious matter concerning the adepts is the Ogryn matrix of Abhuman strains. When the Ogryns were rediscovered on their homeworlds by the Imperium during the Great Crusade, the Imperial Army saw their military potential and began recruiting the Ogryns as close combat soldiers. The recruitment process was relatively easy by Imperial standards as Ogryns hardly needed any training; most Ogryns are quite capable of bringing down almost any enemy and their natural combat skills make them good assault troops. Introducing the formidable Bullgryns, selected from the toughest strain of Ogryn abhumans. Clad in robust heavy armor and armed with rugged assault weaponry tailored to withstand their immense strength, these imposing Astra Militarum figures strike fear into the hearts of their adversaries. Witness the awe-inspiring sight of a line of these heavily-muscled humanoids, advancing with impervious shield formations that render incoming shots harmless. With thunderous blows delivered by their mighty mauls and explosive grenades hurled with precision, the Bullgryns charge into battle with unwavering determination.
