About this deal

Twitten is the eager new guy on the force; Sargent Brunswick is unimaginative but sincere, shackled by the lead cop, a bureaucratic blowhard that avoids doing police work by pretending that Brighton has no crime. On top of all of that, the way religion played into this story was one of the rare exceptions to my rule of not loving religious themes. In her introduction, Truss mentions that this book, in addition to writing a police comedy serial for the BBC, she was hoping to gain membership in the Detection Club of London.

I am being deliberately light on details so that anyone who chooses to read the book does not have any of it spoiled by having information in advance of when it was intended to be delivered. It's also a book that talks heavily about Ely's Jewishness, as she's grown up in an Orthodox Jewish family and is grappling with what religion means to her and her place among Jewish people after having been kicked out by her family. When I say "Brighton police", I refer to (1) Inspector Steine, a do-nothing, see-nothing, self-deludedly important head of department, (2) Sergeant Brunswick, a could-be-a-crime-solver who is easily distracted, and (3) Constable Twitten, a young, brand new member of the force who seems to be bounced from police force to police force because no one can stand him and his know-it-all attitude and cleverness. Overall, I just really was rooting for both characters, especially Ely as she slowly started to reconnect with her Jewish faith and find community again. She left Chabad and New York due to the effects of her addiction, not because of anything to do with being Chabad or Jewish in general.

Just keep that in mind that religion is a VERY important part of Ely's character, and a topic that is discussed HEAVILY. One essential requirement, in my experience, is stamina, and as someone who has slogged around the country as a supporter for 60 years Kynaston doesn’t look short of puff. I received an ARC from Random House Publishing Group-Ballantine and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. After discussion, Holben pitched a work based on a popular lecture he had been giving each year at the Digital Video Expo: "Lighting From Home Depot.Ely is swept off her feet and into bed by a gorgeous man who looks like James Dean, but with a thick Carolina accent. Determined to prove herself to the cold and mysterious DI Juliet Stern, Gabe can't afford any distractions - especially not ones that wake her in the night, reminding her of a past she'd rather forget. Although the culprit and circumstances are apparent from the off, I was pleasantly entertained by this early part, but sadly I did find the humour wearing thin. But while they try to ignore their chemistry, they end up bonding and connecting over their addiction recovery and complicated families.
